Here’s the difference between oil and wax: oil penetrates into the wood to condition it from within, while wax sits on top and creates an extra protective barrier against water and moisture.
I only oil your boards before they leave my shop, I don’t wax them! Skipping that extra step helps me keep the cost of your board down, and waxing is super easy to do yourself at home.
Think of waxing your board like waxing your car. Is it necessary? No. Does it make it look amazing, smooth over little scratches, and repel water like it owes it money? Uh, YEAH. 😎

WHEN IS IT TIME TO RE-OIL?
You’ll usually be able to tell when your board loses that sparkle and starts looking a bit dull or dry. Or maybe you’ll never let it get to that point because you’re really on top of maintenance... but really who does that? Not even me lol.
Ideally, you’ll give your board a fresh coat of oil every couple of months with regular use and washing to keep the wood conditioned and looking its best.
If you’ve lost track of the last time you oiled it, there’s another easy way to tell: watch what the water does when you wash it. A well-conditioned board should repel moisture and water should bead up on the surface. If the wood starts absorbing the water instead of beading it away, it’s time for some oil! (Watch linked video)
↓✦ HOW TO RE-OIL✦ ↓
✦ CLEAN
Wash your board/ lukewarm water and mild soap, then let it dry completely.
✦ OIL
Apply Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil generously over the entire board, including the top, bottom, and edges, and rub it into the wood with a clean cloth.
✦ LET IT SOAK
Give the oil plenty of time to soak into the wood. I like to let it sit overnight, then wipe away any oil that hasn't absorbed.
✦ OPTIONAL, BUT EXTRA DANDY
Follow w/ Walrus Oil Wood Wax for an extra layer of moisture protection & shine.
✦ BACK TO BUSINESS
Give your board a day and then it's ready to get back to work! 🥳
HOW TO WAX YOUR BOARD ✦
For regular upkeep, even if your board has already been waxed, I still recommend oiling first and then following with wax. This gives the wood a chance to soak up that conditioning oil before you add the protective layer on top. However, you can use the wax on its own if you choose!
✦ CLEAN + DRY
Make sure your board is clean and completely dry before getting started.
✦ OIL FIRST
For the full treatment, apply Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil first and give it time to soak into the wood before moving on to your wax.
✦ WAX IT UP
Using a non-woven pad or clean rag, buff the Walrus Oil Wood Wax into the wood using small circular motions until you’ve evenly covered the surface.
✦ GIVE IT 15
Let the wax sit for 15 minutes to do its thing.
✦ BUFF IT OUT
Grab a clean cloth and buff away the excess using those same small circular motions until the surface feels smooth and has a nice sheen. You’ve seen The Karate Kid, right?! Wax on, wax off!
✦ ENJOY THE EXTRA PROTECTION
That layer of wax adds extra shine and water resistance, It helps your board stay conditioned longer, smooths over small knife marks, repels water, and adds an extra layer of protection. 💧✨

HOW TO REVIVE YOUR BOARD ✦
✦ CLEAN
Wash your cutting board with lukewarm water and mild soap, then allow it to dry completely.
✦ SAND
Use the included sandpaper and sanding block to smooth away scratches, knife marks, and rough areas.
✦ OIL
Apply a thin layer of Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil to replenish the wood and bring out its natural color and grain.
✦ WAX
Finish with Walrus Oil Wood Wax for extra shine and water resistance.
✦ ADMIRE YOUR WORK
Buff away any excess, step back, and admire your freshly revived board! ✨
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SUZ'N™
Your Suz’n™ may need a little love too, but not the same kind as your cutting boards! Suz’ns are finished differently and should NOT be maintained with Cutting Board Oil or Wood Wax.
For everyday upkeep, you really don’t need to do much. Keep it clean, keep it dry, and let it keep on spinnin’. ✨
✦ KEEP IT CLEAN
Wash or wipe down your Suz’n™ with mild soap and water as needed. Avoid getting water into the spinning hardware underneath, and never soak it or put it in the dishwasher.
✦ KEEP IT DRY
Wipe away spills and standing water rather than letting them sit. This helps prevent water rings and keeps moisture away from the hardware underneath.
✦ LOOKING A LITTLE DULL?
If your Suz’n™ starts losing its shine, give it a little refresh with Walrus Oil Furniture Polish. This is the product I recommend for maintaining the finish on your Suz’n™, rather than Cutting Board Oil or Wood Wax.
✦ POLISH IT UP
Apply a small amount of Walrus Oil Furniture Polish with a clean cloth, following the directions on the container. Buff it out and watch those pretty wood colors come right back to life. ✨
✦ IMPORTANT!
Your Suz’n™ is made for serving, displaying, organizing, spinning snacks around the table, and generally looking cute as hell. 😎 It is not a cutting board, so please don’t cut directly on the surface.
